What is WiMAX?

WiMAX is the worldwide standard for the interoperability of microwave access services and is being promoted by an industry led organisation called the WiMAX Forum. The WiMAX Forum has over 320 member companies including silicon manufacturers, equipment vendors, service providers and content owners.

Why is it important?

The WiMAX standard enables both base station and access device interoperability delivering reduced deployment costs and increased availability of wireless access devices such as broadband wireless modems, laptops and mobile handsets. The standard also enables potential for new business models including subscription, pay as you go and international roaming.

What will it let me do?

WiMAX provides astandard wireless environment to deliver indoor and outdoor broadband wireless services to business, residential and public sector customers. Subject to regulatory approval, FREEDOM4 also has the future potential to deliver somemobility over its network as WiMAX compatible devices become available in the next few years.

What licence does FREEDOM4 have?

FREEDOM4 owns a national licence for use of broadly technology neutral 3.6-4.2GHz spectrum allowing a WiMAX network to be deployed. FREEDOM4 also holds three metropolitan 28GHz licences covering London, the Midlands and the North West with the technology enabling delivery of quality backhaul or leased line circuits. The combination of spectrum assets gives FREEDOM4 the potential to build a multi-platform wireless infrastructure able to address the business, residential and public sector markets.

Why is having national coverage important?

Holding national spectrum enables targeting of key markets based on economic factors without geographic constraint or spectrum boundary issues
